When I first heard of ABC’s Shark Tank, I envisioned a National Geographic show about man eaters. B-o-r-i-n-g! Turns out the show has nothing to do with the order lamniformes and everything to do with great entertainment.
Shark Tank is an irresistible blend of game show and entrepreneurs – with some borderline business-celebrities. Instead of Soupy Sales and Nipsey Russell choosing what entrepreneurial ideas might get funded each week, viewers get the likes of Mark Cuban, Kevin “Mr. Wonderful” O’Leary, Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Lori Greiner and Robert Herjavec.
These “millionaire sharks” aren’t exactly household names…yet. But once you see and hear them in action they are hard to forget. Each has a huge personality perfect for TV. They also (mostly) have great senses of humor. They also share that rarest of traits for reality shows, genuine chemistry among them.
This is largely because they are all real business people. Risk takers who have made it. Being on this show is not their source of income – they are there to invest (and no doubt stroke their egos).
They all know a good deal when they see one. They just have to vet it out to make sure the opportunity is real. This vetting process allows the viewer to get inside the head of a successful business person’s mind. That is what make this show so fascinating. Never has business acumen been so clearly on display.
Begun as a summer replacement, last year was the first go with a full 22 episode run. Shark Tank easily won it’s time slot. This year proves to be the best yet as the quality of contestants and their entrepreneurial ideas have never been better. Last week the sharks offered one contestant a full million dollar investment.
Produced by reality TV icon Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice, Celebrity Apprentice) the show is based on the Japanese TV Show Dragon’s Den. A typical show has four 10-minute pitches and one “shark update” that shows the progress of a previous contestant.
One of the fastest and most entertaining hours on TV – Friday nights. Family friendly! Enjoy!
